94th birth anniversary of Nurjahan Murshid
Today is the 94th birth anniversary of Nurjahan Murshid, a renowned politician, women’s rights activist, and one of the organisers of the Liberation War.
Marking the day, her family members, Nurjahan Murshid Sangskritik Kendra and Broti sought prayers from the countrymen for the eternal peace of her departed soul, said a press release.
Nurjahan was born in Taranagar of Murshidabad district in 1924, and passed away on September 1, 2003 in Dhaka.
She was amongst the small number of Muslim women who entered higher education, and obtained her master’s degree in history from Calcutta University in the mid 1940s. She was the first Muslim woman to be employed as a broadcaster for All India Radio in 1946.
Nurjahan had actively participated in the anti-British movement and Bangladesh’s Liberation War. An advocate of democracy, she was outspoken against Pakistan’s regime of oppression. She was elected member of parliament in the 1970 national election.
In independent Bangladesh, she was appointed in 1972 as state minister for health and social welfare in the cabinet of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
She was elected to the country’s first parliament in 1973.
Nurjahan Murshid was the first president of Bangladesh Mahila Samity, founder of Agrani Balika Biddyaloy, and a sponsor of Ain o Salish Kendra in its infancy.
