DB arrests five for forging vehicle documents
Detectives have arrested five members of an organised gang, who they claim used to forge all official documents of vehicles.
A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of police carried out a raid on Tuesday and arrested them from the city’s East Kafrul, Abdul Baten, additional commissioner of DB, told reporters yesterday.
The officials also seized a large quantity of counterfeit route permits, registration and fitness certificates of vehicles, tax token, insurance, and registration application forms and 150 seal stamps of different BRTA officers from their possession.
Earlier, detectives arrested two persons -- Mostafa Kamal Joy from Hazaribagh and Shafiqul Islam from Khilkhet -- who used to make fake driving licenses and smart blue book of vehicles. The latest arrests were made based on information gleaned from those two, the DB official said.
“This gang had been forging documents and driving licenses for 10 to 12 years,” Baten said at a press briefing at DMP media centre.
“Many of the drivers who collected the papers from the gang did not even know those were fake,” he said.
The arrestees are: Abdul Khalek, 67; Anwarul Haq Shimul, 42; Abdul Jalil, 64; Abdur Rahim, 31; and Motaleb Hossain, 58.
In primary interrogation, DB got to know that the gang used to act like a one-stop service centre from where they used to supply almost all documents of a vehicle for Tk 5,000 to 6,000.
They used to prepare those documents almost perfectly, Baten said, adding, it is hard to differentiate for anyone except well-trained officers.
Baten said the tendency of collecting fake documents is increasing due to the lengthy process of getting those from the right authorities.
This gang duped customers into believing the documents were original. Since it is relatively easier to obtain, vehicle owners and drivers chose to take help from the gang, he said.
Mashiur Rahman, deputy commissioner of DB (north division), said this gang used to supply documents to 700 to 800 clients per month.
Among the arrestees, Shimul and Jalil had been arrested before for the same offence, DB officials said, adding that they are investigating whether any BRTA officials are involved with the gang.
