BCL men 'bore holes' into a youth's legs
Bangladesh Chhatra League men allegedly drilled holes in the legs of a 28-year-old man on Thursday night, after failing to extort money from his father.
The incident took place in the port city's Hajir Pul area around 10:30pm.
The victim, Md Amzad Hossain, a worker of Chowdhury Engineering Workshop in the city, was undergoing treatment at the casualty ward of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
His father Md Azim, who was also injured in the attack while trying to save his son, filed a case against eight named accused and 15 others unnamed with Chandgaon Police Station on Friday night in this connection.
The victim's family members alleged that the attackers swooped on Amzad and bored holes in his legs, leaving him critically injured, because they failed to extort money from Azim.
They also added that on February 22 the attackers vandalised and looted Azim's broiler chicken shop in the city's Panchlaish area after previously failing to extort money from him. A general diary (GD) was lodged with Panchlaish Police Station in this connection.
However, police said the incident took place over previous enmity.
Speaking to The Daily Star, Amzad said, “I was returning home on a CNG-run auto-rickshaw from a wedding ceremony at a relative's house when a group of 20 to 30 men, led by Jalal, Didar, Nishan and others, stopped my vehicle.
“They dragged me out of the CNG and started beating me. At one point, they tied me to an electric pole and asked to call my father over phone for money,” Amzad said while on the hospital bed.
He added that, after the phone call, his father and elder brother rushed to the spot to save him but they too were attacked.
“They first beat me with an iron rod and at one point they drilled holes into my legs… They also beat my father and brother with iron rods, leaving them injured,” Amzad said.
Locals rushed the trio to CMCH.
Senior Consultant of the casualty ward in CMCH, Rivu Raj Chakraborty, said there were two holes on the victim's legs but they were not sure whether they were done by drills as no bones were hurt.
Police and the victim's family members said that attackers Jalal, Didar, Nishan work under the guidance of a local Jubo League (JL) leader Esrabul Haque.
Contacted, Esrabul said, “Jalal and other men are doing local Chattra League politics in Chandgaon. But I am not sure whether there were any incidents of extortion.”
“I heard the incident took place over due to a dispute over a cricket match but after hearing the details, I had made calls to the police station to help the injured myself,” the JL leader claimed.
“If they [BCL men] are involved in the attack, police should arrest them as the party does not hold the responsibility of such misdeeds,” Esrabul added.
Inspector (investigation) of Chandgaon Police Station Abdur Rahim said the victim's father filed a case accusing eight people including Jalal, Didar and others.
Police were conducting drives to arrest them, he added.
