Make blood tests a must before marriage
A writ petition filed with the High Court (HC) yesterday sought its directive on the government to take necessary steps to compel brides and grooms to submit blood test reports on thalassaemia or drug addiction to registrars before marriage.
Advocate Sayada Shahin Ara Laily submitted the petition as a public interest litigation. As per the petition, a thalassaemia-affected parent may be responsible for the birth of a disabled child. Drug addiction may affect a parent's sexual health as well, said petitioner's lawyer Advocate Md Aklas Uddin Buiyan.
Cabinet secretary, law secretary, senior secretary to the health ministry, director general of department of health services, director general of department of narcotics control and the inspector general of police were made respondents to the rule. The HC may hold hearing on the petition on Sunday, the lawyer said.
