Disha, Omar and Murtaza brothers steal the show
Disha Sultana of Manikganj, Omar Ali of Patuakhali and Murtaza brothers of Narayanganj stole the limelight on the third day of the divisional phase of Bangladesh Youth Games yesterday.
Disha grabbed three gold medals in the Dhaka divisional athletics competition which was held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium athletics track. Disha won the 100m and 200m sprint titles as well as the title in girls' long jump event. She took 12.75 second to finish the 100m sprint on top, beating Afriya Olin (13.27sec) of Dhaka and Sumaiya Dewan (13.50 sec) of Manikganj.
She also clocked 26.8 seconds to win gold in girls' 200m sprint, beating Suraiya Akter (28.7sec) of Dhaka and Mukta (28.9sec) of Shariatpur.
The 100m sprint title in boys' event went to Nadim Molla of Narayanganj, who took 11.45 second to finish his race. Hafizur Rahman (11.50sec) of Gopalganj and Rubel Hossain (11.55sec) of Narshingdi grabbed the second and third positions.
Meanwhile, Omar Ali of Patuakhali won three titles in swimming events of Barisal Division. Omar won the 100m freestyle in 1min 26sec, 50m breaststroke in 32.50sec and 100m breaststroke in 1min 42sec.
The female swimmers from Jhalakathi bagged five out of eight gold medals in girls' swimming competitions, with Tinni Akter winning two gold medals.
Elsewhere, there was a family double in the chess events of the Dhaka divisional phase held at the National Sports Council yesterday, with two brothers from Narayanganj grabbing the boys' titles. Murtaza Muhadi Islam won the title in under-13 group while his elder brother Murtaza Mahathir Islam won the title in under-17 group.
Meanwhile, Tangail district beat Dhaka district 2-1 in the final of the football competition held at BKSP. Golam Nabi gave Tangail the lead in the eighth minute before Joy equalised for Dhaka six minutes later. Dhaka wasted an opportunity to grab the lead, missing from the spot before Ijaharul scored in the 23rd minute to regain the lead for the eventual champions.
