Legal notice seeks demolition of BGMEA building
A Supreme Court lawyer today sent a legal notice to the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) chairman asking him to take steps in seven days to demolish the BGMEA building.
Advocate Manzill Murshid served the notice saying that a contempt of court case will be filed against the Rajuk chairman if he does not take any steps in seven days to knock down the building.
In the notice, Manzill Murshid said the Supreme Court on June 2 last year upheld a High Court order for demolishing the 15-storey BGMEA complex in 90 days.
The SC released the full text of the verdict on November 8 last year.
In the full verdict the apex court asked the BGMEA authorities to demolish the building immediately.
If BGMEA does not demolish the building, Rajuk will take steps to wreck the illegal building in 90 days, the verdict said.
On March 5, the SC dismissed a petition seeking review of its judgement that upheld a High Court order for demolishing the BGMEA complex.
Manzill, in his petition, said the 90-days deadline for Rajuk expired on February 28 this year but Rajuk did not take any steps in this regard which is tantamount to disrespect and contempt of the court.
SC to hear BGMEA plea March 12
The Supreme Court today fixed March 12 for hearing the application filed by BGMEA seeking three years’ time for shifting the offices from 15-storey building in the capital’s Hatirjheel lake.
A three-member bench of the Appellate Division of the SC headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha set the date after BGMEA’s lawyer Advocate Kamrul Haque Siddiqui placed the application before it.
BGMEA yesterday submitted the application seeking three years’ time from the SC to shift the offices from its building.
