Ex-Jubo league leader killed in Sunamganj factional clash
A former Jubo League leader was killed and 50 people were injured in a clash between two factions of Islamic activists over arranging a waz mahfil (sermon session) in Chhatak town in Sunamganj today.
The deceased-- Abdul Basit Babul, son of Abdul Jabbar of Bagbari area of the municipality and former convenor of municipality unit of Bangladesh Jubo League-- succumbed to his injuries on his way to hospital, our Sylhet correspondent reports quoting police.
Ashek Suja Mamun, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chhatak Police Station, said that law enforcers have been informed about his death but the police are yet to receive his body.
Among the injured people, some were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital while others took treatment at Chhatak upazila health complex and a hospital in Sunamganj.
Local administration yesterday evening tried to solve an argument between two factions -- Kawmi and Fultali -- who were set to arrange the waz mahfil today at the same place, Arifuzzaman, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Chhatak, told the correspondent.
Today around 2:30pm, the two factions locked into the clash, he said.
At least 50 people were injured in the hour-long clash, the UNO added.
Contacted, Harun Ar-Rashid, superintendent of Sungamganj district police, said that law enforcers fired rubber bullets and tear gas canisters to control the situation.
Adequate police forces have been deployed in the municipality area to avoid further incident, he added.
