Stop source of arms, money to uproot terrorism: PM
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today renewed her firm resolve to clamp down on terrorism and militancy and said source of arms and money must be stopped at any cost to eliminate the twin demons.
The premier also reaffirmed her government's firm stance not to allow Bangladesh's land to be used for terrorist acts in other countries.
She expressed this view when a delegation of Indian National Congress, led by its General Secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad, called on her at her official Ganabhaban residence here this evening.
The Indian National Congress team included Abhijit Mukherjee, MP, son of Indian President Pranab Mukherjee. They are now in Dhaka to attend the 20th national council of Bangladesh Awami League.
After the meeting, PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters.
Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Leader of the Opposition in Indian Rajya Sabha, highly appreciated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for successfully containing terrorism.
"You are successfully handling the terrorism issue and we will have to fight together against this menace," he said.
The Indian National Congress senior leader also lauded the socioeconomic development of the country under the leadership of the Prime Minister. "Bangladesh is one of the fastest growing economies in the world," he commented.
Nabi handed over a letter of Congress President Sonia Gandhi to the Prime Minister regarding the celebration of birth centenary of former Indian premier Indira Gandhi and sought a write-up from the Prime Minister on Mrs Gandhi.
Briefly elaborating the bonding of the two neighbouring countries, the Congress leader said that both Bangladesh and India share common history.
The prime minister recalled the overwhelming support and assistance of the Indian government and its people during the Liberation War in 1971.
Expressing satisfaction over the existing Bangladesh-India ties, she mentioned that the country to country and party to party relations between the two countries are very excellent.
Sheikh Hasina said the main task of her government to eliminate hunger and poverty. "We are striving to achieve the goal," she said.
Sheikh Helal Uddin, MP, and Kazi Nabil Ahmed, MP, were present at the meting, among others.
Earlier, a delegation of the Communist Party of China, led by its Vice Minister for International Development and Special Envoy of Chinese President Zheng Xiaosong, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban.
