A book lover's reward
At the time when some Bangladeshi students with foreign education came in the spotlight for links with militancy, Mahmudul Hoque Moni studying in the United Kingdom held high a positive image of the country.
Moni, a Bangladeshi master's student of the University of Sussex, was honoured by naming a corner at the university's British Library for Development Studies after him for his contribution in three areas.
Moni made a short film to express the importance of the library.
In April this year, he held a solo exhibition of photographs that he took in the UK, with contribution from some other students as well. He donated 700 pound raised in the programme to a charity there.
The third work of his appreciated was a non-profitable online community named “say for development”. The objective is to reach those, who think of development, with words of love and affection.
On his Facebook page, he expressed his feelings on Thursday for the rare feat.
In a status, he wrote, "I am sharing it with pride, joy and a feeling of discomfort. Today is a big day in my life. Today British Library for Development Studies at the University of Sussex inaugurated a corner named after me -- 'Moni Corner'”.
Two albums with 280 photographs and a Bangladeshi flag are displayed at the corner.
Besides, 17 other photographs taken by Moni are hung at different places of the library.
Moni, who studied international relations and mass communication and journalism in Dhaka University, is now pursuing master's degree in governance and development under Chevening Scholarship programme.
He was assistant commissioner (land) at Bandarbon sador before going to the UK. He had taken up photography before getting the government job.
Talking to The Daily Star by phone, Moni said he had kept a flag of Bangladesh at the library, which would represent Bangladesh overseas.
"I feel proud as a Bangladeshi," he said, adding that Bangladeshi students would get exposure to life abroad through the pictures.
