‘Shuttering’ Stereotypes

"Just by seeing the angle in which she is holding the camera, I can sense that she takes good pictures," commented Satyajit Ray once on Sayeda Khanam, the first female photographer of Bangladesh. Born in 1931, Sayeda was one of those people who broke the stereotype regarding women by stepping in a male-dominated profession like photography. Throughout her illustrated career, Sayeda served as a photojournalist for Begum and a freelance photographer for other newspapers and magazines like Pakistan Observer, Morning News, Dainik Bangla, Dainik Purbadesh, Sangbad, Ittefaq and others.
