Labourer murdered

A day labourer was stabbed to death allegedly by his neighbour at Ranjon village in Srimangal upazila yesterday. The deceased is Wahid Miah, son of Goni Miah of the village. Police said neighbour Angur Miah killed Wahid with sharp weapons following an altercation over previous enmity. A murder case was filed, said Md Abdullah, officer in-charge of Srimangal Police Station.
B'baria rly station ransacked

A gang of masked criminals attacked Brahmanbaria railway station yesterday. Police said the gang blasted a series of cocktails, broke the windowpanes of the station and fled the scene. Locals said Jamaat-Shibir men might have launched the attack. The reason behind the attack could not be known immediately, said Amrito Lal Sarker, station master.
Arms, ammo seized

Army personnel seized a pistol and 20 bullets from the rooftop of an under construction two-storied building at Manikchhari in the town yesterday morning. Zakir Hossain, in-charge of Manikchhari Highway Police Camp, said on secret information, an army team raided the building owned by one Sagir Ahmed and recovered the arms and bullets. Sagir had gone into hiding after the incident, he said.
'Stalker' hurt in mob beating

An alleged stalker was injured in a mob beating at Raghunathpur village in Kaliganj upazila yesterday morning. He was identified as Abdul Kader, 21, son of Rezaul Islam of Enayetpur village. Police said Kader often teased a girl of the area on her way to school. On information, locals caught Kader while stalking the girl and beat him up, leaving him seriously injured. He was admitted to the upazila health complex.
Girl held with yaba

Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested an alleged drug peddler and seized 4000 pieces of yaba tablets from her possession in front of Jamalpur Railway Hospital early yesterday. The arrestee is Halima Aktar, 18, daughter of Muksed Ali of Sadar upazila in Sherpur district. Kamruzzaman Talukder, officer in-charge of DB at Sadar Police Station, said on secret information, a team raided the area and arrested Halima along with four packets containing the yaba tablets.
Bomb hurled at house

Criminals hurled a bomb at the house of a local BNP leader in Ghop area of the town on Saturday night. Emdadul Haque Sheikh, officer in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said a gang threw a bomb at the residence of Syed Saberul Haque Sabu, general secretary of district BNP, around 10:00pm. However, none sustained injuries. Police are investigating the incident, said the OC.
Boy drowns in river

A schoolboy drowned in the River Dhepara under Birganj upazila yesterday. The dead is Zahid Hossain, 15, son of Sadeque Ali of Sujalpur Masterpara. He was a class IX student at Bigranj Pilot High School. Family sources said Sadeque went to the rive for fishing in the morning and remained missing. Later, locals rescued the boy and sent him to the upazila health complex where on duty doctors declared him dead.
Robbers loot house

Robbers looted cash, gold ornaments and other valuables worth Tk 5 lakh from a house after injuring three family members in Kulaura upazila early yesterday. Police said a gang of 15/20 swooped on the house of one Lutfur Rahman Arun and looted Tk 62,000, six tolas of gold ornaments and a laptop at gunpoint and fled the scene. They also stabbed the three while they tried to resist them.
Jagadhatri Puja begins today

A three-day celebration of Jagadhatri Puja will start with enthusiasm and fervour in Bakerganj upazila today. Various programmes have been chalked out on the occasion, said organisers. At least eight puja mandops have been set up in the area for the celebration, said Chandranath Mukharjee, president Kalaskathi Sarbojanin Puja Mandir. Hindu devotees of the region have been observing the puja over 200 years.
