Court asks for report again
A Dhaka court yesterday for the fourth time asked police to submit by October 13 a probe report of the case filed against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on the charge of orchestrating the killing of 42 people during the non-stop blockade enforced by the BNP-led alliance.
Three others are accused in the case -- BNP leaders Rafiqul Islam Mia and Shamser Mobin Chowdhury and pro-BNP intellectual Prof Emajuddin Ahmed.
The court passed the order after Gulshan police failed to submit any probe report on the killings.
On February 2, AB Siddique, president of Bangladesh Jananetri Parishad, a pro-Awami League organisation, filed the case against Khaleda and three others with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka.
Siddique claimed the other three instigated the incidents. In his petition, he said the BNP-led 20-party men threw petrol bombs at vehicles and blasted crude bombs during the non-stop movement, leaving 42 people killed and hundreds injured.
Earlier, Khaleda was accused in five more cases filed by police on the charge of masterminding the arson attacks on public transport during the countrywide blockade.
Of the cases, detectives had earlier pressed charges against Khaleda and several other BNP top leaders in connection with two of the cases.
The other cases are now under police investigation.
