Excitement and sadness mingled in the atmosphere at Dhaka University yesterday as the graduating class celebrated the successful completion of their studies and prepared to bid farewell to the campus, their friends and teachers.
Graduating students, wearing convocation gowns and smiles, hurried about in the morning to take their assembled places to participate in the convocation.
A colourful procession by the students and teachers was brought out on the campus following the university's 47th convocation.
“I will miss my days here in the university filled with idle chats with my friends. Dhaka University was my home away from home,” said Shahidul, a student of philosophy department.
Students also expressed their satisfaction over the arrangement of the convocation by the university authorities.
As the convocation drew to a close, excitement gave away to sadness among the graduates as they prepared to say goodbye to one of the most important part of their lives.
“The programme left us feeling saddened and the feeling will only get worse before it gets any better,” said SM Ashraful, a student of public administration department, as he was submitting his gown after the ceremony.
The students have been collecting gowns for the last three days and spent most of their time on campus often staying from dawn till dusk. They spent those days with their close friends knowing they will miss their student life.
Later, the students had lunch together on the campus and all the gathering spots, including Hakim Chattar, Curzon Hall, Mall Chattar, Shaheed Minar, Fine Arts Faculty and TSC, were abuzz with the students who were leaving their campus life behind.
Some students flocked to their department corridors to have their photo taken with the convocation attire for the last time. Other graduates took group photos with their teachers.
Santosh, a student of Sanskrit department, said, “This is not the end but the end of our beginning. Dhaka University was like a guardian who led us in our path to glory. The university gave us strength and courage to fight against corruption and fraudulence.”
