Woman killed, 45 hurt as nor’wester lashes 2 districts
A woman was killed and 45 people were injured as nor’wester lashed Bhola and Pirojpur districts Tuesday night.
Tahera Begum, 65, of Bheduria village was killed when a mud house collapsed on her during the storm that swept over Dholigournagar and Lord Hardinge unions in Lalmohan upazila around 10:00pm, reports our Bhola correspondent.
Over 30 thatched houses were collapsed and a number of trees uprooted during the one-hour storm, said Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Lalmohon Police Station
Our Pirojpur correspondent adds: At least 45 people were injured and one went missing when a nor’wester lashed six upazilas of the district.
At least five people sustained injuries and one went missing when the nor’wester lashed Pangshia village in Kawkhali upazila.
Md Hasan Habib, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Kawkhali, told The Daily Star that the storm destroyed over 50 houses in the village, rendering several hundred families homeless.
“The injured people have been admitted to Kawkhali Upazila Health Complex and Pirojpur General Hospital and we have teamed up with the local public representatives to start a relief operation,” said Hasan Habib.
Meanwhile, 40 people were injured when the storm hit a Baishakhi fair on Pirojpur Government High School ground in the district town around 7:30pm Tuesday.
Besides, around 1,400 houses were also damaged as the storm lashed Sadar, Zianagar, Nazirpur, Nesarabad and Kaokhali upazila of the district, UNOs of the respective upazilas said.
