Girl gang-raped

Criminals raped a 16-year-old girl in Juri upazila of the district on Sunday. Police and family sources said a gang entered the victim's house in the area on Sunday night and raped her. Brother of the girl filed a case filed a case with Juri Police Station, accusing Faruk Miah, 25, and kaysar Uddin, 27, of the area on Tuesday night, said Md Jalal Uddin, officer in-charge of Juri Police Station.
Man falls off train roof, dies

A man died after falling off the roof of a train at Madhnagar station in the district early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Reaazul Islam, 38, of Sonatola upazila in Bogra district. Jomshed Uddin, assistant station master, Natore, said Reazul fell to the ground when he was travelling in a Dinajpur-bound Ekota Express from Dhaka. He died on the spot.
Youth commits 'suicide'

A youth allegedly committed suicide at Ayera village in Kahaloo upazila on Tuesday evening. The dead was identified as Masud Rana, 20, son of Md Abdul Matin of the village. Police said Masud hanged himself from the ceiling of his room following an altercation with his mother over a family feud. He was rushed to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital (SZMCH) where the attending doctors declared him died.
Jamaat man arrested

Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested a local Jamaat leader in Shaheed Satu Hall market area in the town yesterday afternoon. The arrestee is Enamul Haque, 45, publicity secretary of district unit of Jamaat-e-Islami and an employee of the municipality. Enamul was accused in several cases filed with Sadar Police Station, said Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam of the PS.
Eid relief for poor people

Technical Education Welfare Association [TEWA], an association of technical colleges in district, distributed cash and clothes among 130 destitute people at a programme in the town yesterday on the occasion of Eid. Each person gets a saree, a lungi and Tk 500, said the organisers. Deputy Commissioner Mustaqim Billah Faruqui addressed the programme as chief guest. Among others, Principal of Mymensingh Polytechnic Institute Farid Uddin and Ekhlas Uddin Khan, spoke. Md Nazmul Islam, president of TEWA, presided over the programme.
Bombs recovered

Police seized two bombs and seven sharp weapons from Keru's sugarcane field in Damurhuda upazila on Tuesday. Acting on a tip-off, police raided the sugarcane field where a gang of criminals were holding a secret meeting to commit a crime in the area. A police team, led by SI Mizanur Rahman and SI Jakir Hossain of Damurhuda Police Station, launched the drive and recovered the bombs and sharp weapons including a Chinese axe. However, the gang managed to flee, sensing the presence of the law enforcers, said police.
Lightning kills farmer

A farmer was killed by lightning at Talom Padmapara village in Tarash upazila on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Didar Hossain, 45, son of Sukur Ali of the village. Locals said Didar was struck by lightening around 1.00pm while he was going to his cropland and died on the spot.
Indian cumin seized

Police seized a large consignment of smuggled cumin worth Tk 2 lakh on Dhaka-Khulna highway in Wapda area of Sripur upazila early Tuesday. Officer In-Charge of Sripur Police Station Biplob Kumar Nath said on secret information, a police team intercepted a truck on the highwayand seized huge quantity of Indian cumin in sacks.
5 held with hemp

Police arrested five alleged drug peddlers along with 500 grams of hemp at Kalishankarpur village in Mohammadpur upazila early Tuesday. The arrestees are Shahid, 45, Sohel, 25, Abul Bashar, 32, Parvez, 19, and Shahabuddin, 20. Officer In-Charge of Mohammadpur Police Station Monirul Islam said on secret information, a team of police raided a house of Manjur Hossain on Monday midnight and arrested the five.
One stabbed to death

A man was stabbed to death at Fasitola village in Shibganj upazila on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Babu Mia, 40, son of Ayez Uddin of Kheruapara village. Police said a gang of 5/7 attacked Babu with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured while he was returning home from his daughter's house. He was rushed to the hospital where on duty doctors declared him dead.
2 jailed for blackmailing girl

A mobile court in Meherpur district on Tuesday jailed two youths for blackmailing a schoolgirl by saying that they would release her 'naked photos' on internet. Abdul Jalil, Additional Police Superintendent of Meherpur, said Sahjahan Ali alias Saju, 25, son of Akhher Ali, and Kaizul Hasan, 24, son of Babar Ali of Monakhali village in Sadar upazila of the district recently took snap of a girl of Meherpur town secretly. Later, Saju collected the mobile phone number of the girl and made an illicit proposal. Being refused, Saju and Kaizul threatened the girl that they would release her photos on internet after making it naked through computer. Tracking phone calls, police arrested the two youths and produced them before a mobile court that sentenced them to three months' imprisonment.
