Journalists in Ctg blast bomb attack on press
CHITTAGONG, Jan 5: A protest rally of the journalists and newspaper owners association today strongly deplored the bomb attack on the Daily Azadi and demanded immediate arrest of those responsible for the incident, reports BSS.
Held at Chittagong Press Club auditorium the rally was presided over by the President of Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) Ataul Hakim.
President of Chittagong Press Club Abu Sufian, Managing Editor of the Daily Azadi M A Malek, Editor of the daily Purbokone Taslimuddn Chowdhury, News Editor of the Daily Azadi Sadhan Dhar, journalists Obaidul Haq, Mohammad Yusuf, Kazi Jafrul Islam, M Nasirul Haq, Farook Iqbal, Swapan Mahajan, Aktherun-Nabi, Sayed Murtoza Ali, Helaluddin Chowdhury, Shahidul Alam, Samir Barua, Jashim Chowdhury (Sabuj) and Ashoke Chowdhury spoke at the rally. CUJ General Secretary Nurul Ameen conducted it.
Speakers at the rally said continued bomb attacks on newspapers and press club are deplorable in any civilised society.
An identified circle is behind it as part of its evil design.
"This identified circle is repeating such incident as no action was taken against the attackers in the past which led journalists and newspaper offices to a state of insecurity," they said.
The Daily Azadi, the oldest Bengali daily in Chittagong came under bomb attack by a band of miscreants last night.
The journalists leaders urged the government to take effective steps to ensure freedom of the press and security of the journalists.
The meeting unanimously decided to keep six inches space blank in the dailies of Chittagong for next ten days in protest against the incident.
