Immediate rehabilitation demanded
Seven eminent citizens urged the authorities concerned to immediately provide proper rehabilitation and compensation to victims of the August 3 arson attack on indigenous communities in Khagrachhari district's Matiranga upazila.
Following the attack, 380 Tripura families fled to neighbouring areas, states Kapeeng Foundation.
The citizens recommended exemplary punishment for the perpetrators and quickly making public reports of three committees under National Human Rights Commission, the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs and Khagrachhari District Administration investigating the incident.
The attack, by Bangalee settlers, was predetermined, instigated by a handful of people through rumours, said a statement signed by the seven who recently visited some of the affected areas including Bandorsing Para, Boga Para, Sorbeswar Para, Monudas Para and Lijh Headman Para.
During the attack, the administration, law enforcers and intelligence agencies failed to play a proper role while Border Guard Bangladesh remained apparently silent, they said.
Signatories to the statement are lawmaker Fazle Hossain Badsha, rights activists Khushi Kabir, Prof Anu Mohammad and Nirup Dewan, Barrister Sara Hossain, researcher Dr Swapan Adnan and journalist Sushmita S Preetha.
