Mother, girl ostracised
A woman and her daughter are passing days amid sufferings and panic at Chandmari village in Sreemangal upazila of the district for the last three months as an influential quarter has ostracised them to vent wrath for rejecting the proposal to marry the girl.
The girl's mother Lutfunnesa filed a case with Sreemangal Police Station against Noel Mia, member of the local union parishad (UP), Nur Hossain, Md Rafiq Mia, Md Faruk Mia and Md Sohrab Mia a few days ago.
According to the case statement, Nur Hossain, a resident of Chandmari village, asked Lutfunnesa to marry her daughter Farzana Akhter with a relative of Nur in last June.
“As I did not agree, Nur got angry and asked the neighbouring people not to keep any contact with us. Amid the tormenting situation, my daughter Farzana once tried to commit suicide. Now Nur is demanding Tk 20,000 for allowing our return to society,” the plaintiff said.
People are too afraid to protest against the inhuman treatment with the family as the perpetrators are very influential, said Abdul Mannan, 85, a villager.
Sreemangal Police Station Sub Inspector Md Al Amin said they found authenticity of the allegation during an initial investigation.
“We are conducting further investigation to know the situation,” he said.
Contacted, UP member Noel Mia said, “I don't have any connection with the matter.”
Sreemangal Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammed Mobasherul Islam said, “I heard the incident. Ostracism is a criminal offence. Action will be taken against the culprits.”
