Burnt For Toll

Cops yet to arrest Jubo League leader

The police are yet to arrest Jubo League leader Kalu Miah on the charge of inflicting burn injuries on Jahangir Alam, who makes his living by running a tea stall in front of the city's Phulbaria Super Market.
On Sunday, Kalu poured boiling water on Jahangir from a kettle of the tea stall as the victim could not pay him his “dues”.
For the space in front of the market, Jahangir has been paying Kalu Tk 150 every day as toll for the last one year.
But for the last 10 days, he could not pay him as he had been having a bad time with his business, which infuriated Kalu, office secretary of Phulbaria unit Jubo League.
So he picked up a kettle and poured boiling water on the thirty-year-old tea vendor.
During preliminary investigation, police found evidence that Kalu Miah had poured hot water on the body of Jahangir, Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station, told The Daily Star on Sunday night.
Police had been putting forth their best efforts to arrest Kalu, he added.
Alamgir, brother of the victim, told this correspondent yesterday that they had not yet filed any case as they were busy collecting money for the treatment of his brother.
Jahangir suffered 20-25 percent burns and has been undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The family will file a case against Kalu soon, Alamgir said. He demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment for Kalu.
