Felani Killing

BSF to take more time to start fresh trial

India's Border Security Force yesterday said it would take some more time to initiate a fresh trial into the killing of teenage Bangladeshi girl Felani Khatun along the border with West Bengal in 2011.
"The process (of starting the fresh trial) has not started as yet. Hopefully, it will start soon," Additional Director General of BSF BD Sharma told reporters in New Delhi without giving any timeframe.
In September, BSF had rejected its special court's acquittal of a BSF constable, Amiya Ghosh, charged with the killing and decided to hold a fresh trial in the case.
This was the first time that BSF put one of its men on trial over a border killing.
Felani, 15, was shot dead at Anantapur border point in Phulbari upazila of Kurigram while she was crossing into Bangladesh from India on January 7, 2011.
Meanwhile, BSF DG Subhash Joshi said illegal migration from Bangladesh had come down, as nearly 75 percent of the 4,096-km border had been fenced till now.
In the context of Bangladesh's upcoming general election, he said they were prepared in terms of security-related challenges that might occur along the frontier.
