BOA to ask for hartal respite

Officials of the Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) are considering meeting with the opposition political parties within the next few days to request them not to impose hartals during the 8th Bangladesh Games to be held in Dhaka from April 20 to 28.
The organisers are apparently worried over recent political programmes, especially the hartals, and are in doubt over whether the Bangladesh Games will get underway on time.
“The political situation at present is worrisome for all and we on behalf of the Bangladesh Olympic Association will go to the political parties and request them to declare softer political programmes instead of hartals during the Bangladesh Games,” said the Games' steering committee chairman and BOA vice president Harunur Rashid yesterday.
Harun believes that if they fail to hold the Bangladesh Games in April it will not be possible to host the games this year because of possible weather disruptions, and the upcoming month of Ramadan and the national elections.
