Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) has decided to operate 16-hour ferry service between Munshiganj's Shimulia and Shariatpur's Majhikandi waterway.
BIWTC Director (Commercial) SM Ashiquzzaman confirmed the development, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.
SM Ashiquzzaman said, regular ferries will ply from 4pm to 8am (on the next day) in the new Shimulia-Majhikandi route. In addition, during the day, the ferries will run between Shimulia and Madaripur's Banglabazar waterway from 8am to 4pm. Only light vehicles are permitted to use the ferry.
The Padma river has strong currents at night. There is danger of ferries hitting the pillar of Padma Bridge at that time. The Shimulia-Banglabazar ferry service is closed at night as a result of this, he said.
Pillars of the Padma Bridge will not be in the new Shimulia-Majhikandi waterway. So, the ferry will run on the new waterway at night.
On two different waterways, the same four ferries will operate.
