Truck workers' strike suspends trade at Benapole port
Benapole Truck Motor Workers' Union has stopped working for an indefinite period since this afternoon as Petrapole Port Authority in India did not return the body of a Bangladeshi truck driver.
The move has suspended trade through the land port, said General Secretary of Benapole Truck Workers' Union Md Shahin Hossain.
Following the strike, hundreds of goods-loaded trucks were seen standing on both sides -- Petrapole Port and Benapole Port, reports our Benapole correspondent.
Truck driver Nazmus Shahadat Babul died of cardiac arrest last night, reports our Benapole correspondent quoting Kartik Chakraborty, general secretary of Petrapole CHA Staff Association in India.
Shahin Hossain also said they will continue the strike until the body is returned.
He said the Petrapole Port Authority hasn't returned the body despite repeated requests.
Yesterday morning, a truck from Golden Jute Industries in Faridpur (Dhaka Metro-T-18-3053) went to Petrapole with 235 bales of jute products.
Nazmus was staying overnight at the Petrapole Port for unloading the cargo.
Acting Director of Benapole Port Rezaul Karim confirmed the news of the truck driver's death and said, the Port Authority of India will hand over the body after post-mortem and following legal process.
