The incumbent Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy today got the Awami League nomination to contest the upcoming elections of the city corporation.

AL local government nomination board made the decision to back Ivy at a party meeting at the prime minister's official Gono Bhaban residence this evening, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.

Narayanganj City Corporation is scheduled to go for elections on January 16, 2022, according to the schedule announced by the Election Commission.

Ivy has already been elected NCC mayor twice -- in 2011 and in 2016.

She was elected mayor in 2011 as an independent candidate, and in 2016, she won the NCC elections with an AL ticket.

Upon getting the AL ticket, Ivy expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the AL president.

She said, "I am grateful to the people of Narayanganj and the grassroots. She (Sheikh Hasina) listened to the heartbeat of the grassroots and handed over 'boat' to me, giving priority to the people of Narayanganj, for which we are eternally grateful."

"She gave me the nomination because she thought I was capable. I hope that January 16th will give us another victory in the 50th anniversary of our independence."

Meanwhile, AL leaders and activists took out a procession on Bangabandhu Road in Narayanganj city and distributed sweets as Mayor Ivy was given party nomination.
