Postponed elections to 161 union parishads scheduled for Sept 20
The postponed elections to 161 union parishads will be held on September 20 and the by-polls to Cumilla-7 constituency will be held on October 7, said the election commission.
The commission also announced to hold by-polls to 12 upazilas, Chairman post in nine upazilas and Vice Chairman post in three upazilas, EC Secretary Humayun Kabir Khandaker said today after a meeting at the EC office.
In March, the EC decided that elections to all UPs will be held in several phases. On March 3, the EC announced the schedule for polls to 371 UPs in the first phase, fixing April 11 as the election day.
But it delayed the election due to Covid-19 and fixed the election date for June 21.
In early June, the commission decided to postpone elections to 167 union parishads in Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Noakhali, Chattogram and Cox's Bazar due to a surge in Covid-19 cases.
Elections to the remaining 204 UPs were held on June 21.
Humayun said that elections to the 161 union parishads will take place from 8:00am to 4:00pm.
Elections at Saint Martin's Island will not take place on September 20 due to communication problem and polls to five union parishads will not take place as candidates for those have died.
Humayun announced the schedule of by-polls to the Cumilla-7 constituency scheduling the election date for October 7.
The last date for submission of nomination papers of the aspirants in the election is September 13, while the nomination papers will be scrutinised by the commission officials on September 14.
The last date for withdrawal of candidacy is September 19.
The Cumilla-7 constituency fell vacant on July 30.
