The government yesterday appointed nine new deputy commissioners and transferred one.
The move is considered significant as the DCs will be the returning officers in the districts during the next general election slated for January.
This is the first time the government has appointed officers from the 27th batch of BCS as DCs. They were recruited during the Fakhruddin Ahmed-led caretaker government, and they got appointments in 2009 when the Awami League was in power.
Of the 10 officers, three were assistant personal secretaries (APS) to ministers, one was the APS to a mayor from the AL, and another one was the APS to principal secretary to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
Anisur Rahman, a 24th batch officer who was the DC of Gazipur, has been transferred to Dhaka.
According to a gazette notification issued by the public administration ministry, Shah Mozahid Uddin, APS to Dhaka (North) City Corporation mayor and a 25th batch officer, is appointed as the DC of Bandarban; Kaisarul Islam, APS to principal secretary to the PMO, is the new DC of Tangail; Md Asaduzzaman, APS to the home minister, is now the DC of Pabna; Arifuzzaman, APS to deputy minister of water resources ministry, is the new DC of Shariatpur; Khandakar Mushfiqur Rahman, APS to the state minister for disaster management, is now the DC of Cumilla.
Mohammad Mossaraf Hossain, home ministry deputy secretary and a 25th batch officer, is now the DC of Rangamati; Suraiya Jahan, deputy secretary at the Finance Division, has been made the DC of Lakshmipur; Shahina Aktar, deputy secretary at the Economic Relations Division, is the new DC of Feni; and Abdul Fatey Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, deputy secretary at the Power Division, is now the DC of Gazipur.
With the latest appointment and transfer, 29 DCs are from the 24th batch, 17 from the 25th batch, 11 from 22nd batch and seven from 27th batch.
It is likely that between 10 and 15 other districts will get new DCs in the coming days.
