Man held in Karwan Bazar for harassing Australian vlogger
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) today arrested a man from the capital's Karwan Bazar area after a video of him harassing an Australian citizen and travel vlogger Luke Damant went viral on Facebook.
The arrestee's name is Md Kalu, 60, from Madaripur district.
HM Azimul Haque, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP's) Tejgaon division, confirmed the development to The Daily Star.
Meanwhile, Luke Damant commented under a post by Tourist Police, Bangladesh confirming Kalu's arrest saying "I have come across and viewed Md. Kalu's apology video and I accept his apology. I forgive him for his actions and wish that he is released and the charges are removed against his name. I do not want him to suffer and believe he deserves a 2nd chance to live an honest life."
A team of Tejgaon police and another team from Hatirjheel Police Station apprehended the suspect near the Karwan Bazar level crossing, he added.
"We are interrogating Kalu to find out why he harassed the Australian citizen. Legal action will be taken against him after interrogation," said the police official.
Police said Kalu admitted to being involved in the harassment against Luke during his visit to Dhaka.
The video went viral after Luke Damant posted it four days ago, showing the man behaving poorly with him at the Panthapath-Tejgaon link road.
The video received over nine million views on Facebook, drawing the attention of DMP.
The suspect has been charged under Section 77 of the DMP Ordinance and was sent to court, said police.
