India hands over youth's body after 9 months
Indian police have handed over the body of a Bangladeshi man, nearly nine months after he was beaten to death in Jalpaiguri district of India's West Bengal.
The deceased is Abdus Salam,32, son of Shahidul Islam of Satmera Kaharpara village in Panchagarh's Sadar upazila, said Abdul Latif Mia, officer-in-charge of Panchagarh Sadar Police Station.
The body of Salam was handed over to Panchagarh's Tentulia Police Station through Banglabandha Immigration check post yesterday evening, OC Abdul Latif told our Thakurgaon correspondent today.
The body was kept at the mortuary of a Jalpaiguri hospital, added the police official.
On the night of August 23 last year, Salam along with two other people entered in Chaulhati Baruapara village under Rajganj thana of Jalpaiguri through Amarkhana border, said the OC.
Later, suspecting them as cattle thieves, the Indian villagers chased them and caught Salam. He was beaten to death in the early hours of August 24 . The other two managed to flee.
Locals of Satmera Kaharpara said the trio were cattle traders.
Following the incident, a case was filed with Rajganj Police Station in India on the same day.
As the family members came to know about the incident through social media, they informed the matter to local administration. They contacted official on the Indian side for bringing the body back.
After completion of official procedure, the body was handed over to family members last night, OC Latif added.
