Increased travel tax collection begins at Benapole Land Port
Benapole Land Port authorities today started collecting the increased travel tax announced in the budget for 2023-24 FY.
India-bound passengers using the land port are having to pay Tk 1,000 as travel tax, reports our local correspondent. Previously they had to pay Tk 500.
"In the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2023-24, the passenger travel tax has been fixed at Tk 1,000. Which has been implemented from today (Saturday)," said the Director of Benapole Port Abdul Jalil.
Shafayet Hossain, joint commissioner of Benapole customs, said that passengers who are under 12 years old, cancer patients, blind, or have any other disability, do not need to pay the travel tax.
Displeased passengers at the port demanded the withdrawal of the increased amount.
Indian citizen Krishnapado came to visit a relative in Gopalganj through Benapole Land Port on June 20. At that time, he knew that he would have to pay Tk 500 as travel tax when returning.
"But today I had to pay double the amount," said the upset passenger.
Many passengers also sought an explanation from the police officials at the port, said Ahsan Habib, officer-in-charge (OC) of the Benapole check post.
At present, almost five to six thousand Bangladeshi passengers travel to India for medical, education, tourism, and business purposes through the Benapole Land Port, reports our correspondent.
