IAB mayoral candidate comes under attack
Islami Andolon Bangladesh mayoral candidate Mufti Syed Faizul Karim and several supporters were injured in an attack allegedly by ruling party men during the Barishal City Corporation polls this afternoon.
The attack took place around 12:30pm at Choumatha Mor area at Ward No 22, witnesses said.
Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) Commissioner Saiful Islam told journalists that an attack had taken place. "We are not sure who carried out the attack. We are trying to identify them after analysing CCTV footage."
Talking to reporters, Faizul alleged that supporters of Abul Khair Abdullah, the Awami League candidate, attacked them when he came out of the Sabera Khatun Girl's High School polling centre.
"I saw many people wearing 'boat badges' were influencing voting inside the centre. I told them that they were not supposed to be there as they were not agents. I then asked the presiding officer about them," he said.
"They were asking people to vote for a specific ballot symbol. They attacked me because I was talking to the presiding officer about it," he said.
"I will fight till the end of the voting," he said after lodging complaints with the local election office.
Afzalul Karim, chief election coordinator of the Awami League mayoral candidate, said, "We don't know who attacked."
He alleged that supporters of IAB, including some from outside Barishal, were trying to create instability during the election.
