Don’t want division, will work with all: Khair
Abdul Khair Abdullah, the newly elected mayor of the Barishal City Corporation (BCC), today said he did not want any division and was eager to work with everyone irrespective of party affiliation.
A day after winning the BCC polls, the ruling party-backed mayor-elect made the remark when a reporter asked him whether he would work with all Awami League leaders and supporters as many were not seen during the campaign.
There were reports of a rift between Abul Khair Abdullah and his nephew Serniabad Sadiq Abdullah, the incumbent mayor, as Khair got the AL ticket for the BCC election. The followers of Abul Hasanat Abdullah, Sadiq's father, also stayed away from campaigning.
Sadiq, also the secretary of Barishal city AL unit, did not even come to Barishal from Dhaka to cast his vote.
Khair Abdullah has carried out the entire election activities with his trusted leaders and workers.
"I want to thank all the people of Barishal for electing me by a huge margin despite various hurdles," said Khair.
"I also want to express my gratitude and may almighty Allah give me the strength to protect the dignity of the love given to me by people from all walks of life," he said.
Khair further said he will prioritise all commitments made during the campaign.
"But I will check and prioritise those that are important. My manifesto is for the residents of Barishal, and for the development of the people," he added.
