Bangladesh signs new LNG deal with Oman
Bangladesh has signed a new deal with Oman to get an additional 1.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the next 10 years from 2026.
The deal can be extended for 5 years more.
Today, Bangladesh's state-owned Petrobangla signed the new agreement with Oman's OQ trading at a function at Hotel Shonargaon.
Currently, Bangladesh has been importing 1-1.5 MTPA of LNG since 2019 under an existing deal.
Under the new deal, the number of additional cargos will be four in 2026 and upto 16 cargoes till 2028 and 24 cargos later till 2035.
Petrobabangla's secretary Ruchira Islam and OQT's executive director Said Al Maawali signed the contract for their respective side.
Tawfiq E Elahi, Prime Minister's advisor on energy and power, and Oman Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdul Ghaffar Albulushi were present at the contract signing ceremony, said a press release of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
The price of LNG was not disclosed.
However, the energy advisor Tawfiq said, "It will be a good rate."
He said this deal will enhance the energy security of the country. "We have two floating LNG regasification unit, another two will be set up soon. One land-based LNG terminal will also be set up in future."
Energy Secretary Dr Khairuzzaman Majumder and Petrobangla Chairman Zanendra Nath Sarker were also present on the occasion.
