A man was beaten by a mob over rape allegations in the capital's Khilkhet area last night.

Seven policemen were also injured in the attack by the angry mob while trying to take the youth into custody.

A police van was also vandalised during the incident, said police.

The incident took place at Khilkhet Bazar around 11:00pm on Tuesday.

Khilkhet police told The Daily Star that police went to the spot on information that locals were beating a young man over rape allegations.

When the young man was taken inside a police van, more than 100 people attacked and vandalised the police vehicle in Khilkhet Bazar.

Khilkhet Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamal Hossain, Inspector (Investigation) Ashiqur Rahman, three sub-inspectors (SI), a constable and the driver were injured.

They are currently undergoing treatment at Kurmitola Hospital.

The young man was also rescued and admitted to the hospital.
