Young man, woman tortured brutally by ‘UP member’ in Jashore; 4 held

A twenty-two-year old man and a 19-year-old girl have been brutally tortured allegedly by some people, including a union parishad member, publicly at a village in Jashore Sadar upazila.

Tajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Jashore Kotwali Police Station, said the incident took place on March 16. After a video clip on the torture went viral on social media yesterday, Anisur Rahman, a member of Churamonkathi union Parishad, went into hiding.

Meanwhile, police arrested four people early today in a case in connection with the incident, our Benapole correspondent reports quoting OC Tajul Islam.

"We arrested four accused after the girl 's father filed a case with the police station accusing four named people including the UP member and seven-eight unidentified people last night," said the OC.

The arrestees are Aiub Hossain, 28, Bhutto, 25, Abdul Alim, 23, Mosharaff Hossain, said the police official.

Quoting the case statement, the OC said the girl was returning home on the evening of March 16 from Waz Mahfil in a nearby village on a bicycle by a local youth.

When they reached the intersection of Abdulpur village, they were intercepted by some people, including UP member Anisur Rahman, bringing the allegation of immoral activities.

Later, they beat the duo with shoes and sticks in front of hundreds of people, leaving them seriously injured.

On information, the girl's family rescued them and admitted them to Jashore General Hospital, said the OC quoting the statement.

Daud Hossain, chairman of the Churamankati Union Parishad also confirmed the incident and said UP member Anisur should not have tortured the boy and girl.
