Special drives against illegal weapons ahead of polls: DMP chief
Police will conduct special drives to recover illegal weapons ahead of the upcoming national election, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Habibur Rahman today.
"The drive against illegal weapons is a regular activity of the police. However, these operations are intensified on special occasions," he said while speaking at a workshop on the role of journalists in preventing extremism at CIRDAP auditorium today.
The city police chief said if militants want to spoil the election, they will be resisted and Bangladesh police has that capacity.
He said, besides police and media, people's participation is needed to eradicate militancy and extremism.
Meanwhile, at a meeting at DMP headquarters, the commissioner said security measures will be taken ahead of Durga Puja in the city.
He said phone numbers of Puja Udjapan Parishad leaders and patrol police should be hung in public in every puja mandap for quick contact, he said.
Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit Chief Md Asaduzzaman, President of Bangladesh Crime Reporters' Association Mirza Mehedi Tamal its general secretary Mamunur Rashid also spoke in the programme.
