Six temples vandalised in Naogaon
Unidentified criminals vandalised 11 idols at six Hindu temples in Naogaon's Porsha upazila early yesterday.
The vandalism took place around the same time in two neighbouring villages of Bhabanipur and Soriala when the villagers were asleep, said police and local administration officials.
In Bhabanipur village, seven idols were vandalised at four temples. Of them, three were of a Kali temple, one of a Shiv temple, two of a Sannyasa temple and the other an under-construction idol of a Kali temple.
In Soriala village, three idols of Laxmi temple and one idol of a Monosha temple were damaged.
Locals came to know about the vandalism after they woke up yesterday, said Sudeb Saha, president of the upazila unit of Hindu Bouddha Christian Oikya Parishad.
Visiting the spots, Gaziur Rahman, additional superintendent of police in the district, said they got some clues which would help them arrest the criminals soon.
Quoting locals, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Nazmul Hamid Reza said the criminals came from outside and fled after committing the vandalism in the dark of the night.
Some 100 Hindu Saha and Burman families have been living peacefully with Muslims in the two villages for more than 50 years, he said.
Local Hindu families said a sense of panic gripped them after the incident.
The local administration, however, assured them of providing security, they said.
Meanwhile, a court in Feni yesterday granted police one day to grill four accused in a case filed over vandalising and looting Hindu temples and houses in the town on October 16.
