Rab arrests one over illegal alcohol trade in Dhaka
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) today claimed it has arrested a person involved in illegal alcohol trade, using social media, from Bashundhara RA in Dhaka.
Conducting a raid, Rab arrested Nafiz Mohammad Alam, alias Nafiz Don (21), from his residence in Bashundhara area in the early hours of Thursday.
Rab also recovered a huge stash of foreign alcohol, ice (methamphetamine), cannabis and pethidine (opioid), along with toy pistols, spy cameras, police gear, and a car bearing a police sticker during the raid.
Lt Col Abdullah Al Momen, commanding officer of Rab-1, confirmed the matter and said Nafiz ran an alcohol business under the name "Syndicate International" on social media.
Another woman, Ratri Khan (23), who was with Nafiz at the time, was also arrested by Rab.
In 2017, Nafiz was arrested in connection with the murder of a 14-year-old, Adnan Kabir, in Uttara over establishing supremacy of teen gangs in the area. The charge-sheet later named him as one of the accused. He was reportedly a leader of one of these teen gangs.
According to the law enforcement agency, Nafiz started the alcohol business in the city after coming out of jail on bail and supplied alcohol in different areas of the capital, including Gulshan, Banani, Mohammadpur, and Uttara.
Lt Col Abdullah Al Momen said Nafiz used his Bashundhara house as a warehouse to store foreign liquor.
Rab seized 361 bottles of alcohol, 299 cans of beer, 0.34 gm of ice, 50 gm of cannabis, a private car with police sticker and police beacon lights, four walkie-talkie sets, one police cap, two police coats, four coat pins bearing police monogram, two toy pistols, two spy cameras, one hard disk, one laptop, gambling equipment, four mobile phones, and Tk 4.79 lakh in cash, among others.
He added that they suspect he might be impersonating as a police officer to secure deals.
Rab further said that private pictures of women were found in his phone and hard disk that they suspect were taken using the spy camera.
Nafiz said he rented the Bashundhara house in December last year. He claimed he was a third-year student at a private university and had permits of two bars in Dhaka to consume alcohol.
"I drink liquor at bars and have permits," he said, admitting that he possessed the bottles of alcohol but not ice.
Earlier, Nafiz was arrested twice following teen gang rivalry.
Nafiz, who was arrested over Adnan murder in 2017, was also accused in another case over stabbing a rival teen gang leader in Uttara. He secured bail in the case a few days before Adnan was murdered.
