Rab arrests 53 muggers, extortionists from 15 Dhaka locations

Rab arrested 53 members of mugging and extortionist gangs during separate raids at different areas in Dhaka yesterday.
"We carried out raids at 15 spots under the jurisdiction area of Rab-3 and arrested them," said Khandaker Al Moin, Rab's Legal and Media wing director, at a press conference today.
Rab also seized Tk 1.5 lakh, 60 mugged cellphones and 46 sharp weapons from their possession, he said.
The Rab director said they intensified their drive as muggers and extortionists become more active during Ramadan and ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Muggers are active when the roads are usually deserted during iftar and sehri. Besides, a section of people is extorting money from goods carrying trucks, traders of kitchen markets and shopping malls, footpaths, he said.
Each of the mugging and extortionist gang consists of four to five members, he said.
Rab has identified more than 50 spots in Dhaka city and such drives will continue, Moin said.
