Minority Watch demands judicial inquiry over mother-son torture in DB custody
Bangladesh Minority Watch, a human rights organisation working for the rights of minorities, has condemned the inhuman torture of Shyamoli Haldar Rupa and her 14-year-old son Diganta Halder in the name of interrogation by detaining them at the Dhaka District North DB office for three consecutive days from September 6 to September 9.
Advocate Rabindra Ghosh, president of Bangladesh Minority Watch, strongly condemned the incident and demanded departmental action against the police officials involved in the incident, reports our Savar correspondent.
He came up with the demands after talking to the locals and victims at the house of the victim's family in Barbaria Majhipara area of Dhamrai upazila this afternoon (October 7, 2022).
Speaking to The Daily Star, Rabindra Ghosh said, "How the law enforcement agencies will interrogate the accused during the investigation of a case, how long they can keep them in detention, how they will interrogate anyone if they are suspected, everything is clearly stated in the prevailing laws and police provisions of our country. But the police officials concerned did not follow anything about what happened to the family."
In addition to beating up a lady after confining her for three days, her school-going son was beaten up in front of his mother by hanging him in front of his mother, which is quite inhumane, he said.
"The police can't do this. Kirtan, an accused arrested in the case, was detained in police custody for three days and tortured inhumanly, taken from DB's Dhaka district north office to the southern office, which is a complete violation of human rights", added Rabindra Ghosh.
"We strongly condemn the incident and demand that every police officer involved in the incident be brought under judicial inquiry and punishment is ensured," he said.
On behalf of the minority watch family, a case will be filed against the concerned DB officials in the court soon, he said.
Locals claimed that male members of the area fled the vicinity for a month following the incident fearing the crackdown of DB police over which a discontent was created among the locals. They demanded punishment of the concerned DB officials.
Condemning the incident, local UP member Iman Ali, said they (DB) created so much panic in the area that no male member could sleep peacefully for a month centring the incident.
