HC stays suspension order of CoU student
The High Court today stayed for six months Cumilla University authorities' decision that suspended its student Mohammad Iqbal Monwar on August 2 for reporting on a speech delivered by the university's vice-chancellor on corruption.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned of the university and government to explain why the decision of suspending Monwar, also a reporter of the daily Jaijai Din, should not be declared illegal.
Monwar, 24, is pursuing his Masters degree in English at Cumilla University while also working as a campus correspondent for the Bangla daily Jaijaidin since 2019.
The HC bench of Justice Bhishmadev Chakraborty and Justice Md Ali Reza issued the order and rule following a writ petition filed by Iqbal Monwar challenging the legality of suspension order.
Iqbal's lawyer Shihab Uddin Khan told The Daily Star that there is no legal bar for his client to attend the classes and exams at the university and run his academic activities following the HC order.
On July 31, a report titled "Corruption is the reason for development in Bangladesh: CoU VC" was published in the daily, detailing some remarks made by VC AFM Abdul Moyeen during a university programme.
In the suspension order, it was mentioned that Monwar was suspended for "violating university discipline".
According to the order, Monwar allegedly distorted a statement made by the VC and intentionally circulated it with misleading information to tarnish the university's image.
Monwar refuted the allegations and claimed that he only reported the statement made by the VC during a programme.
