Graft case: Defence ends argument, seeks acquittal of DIG Mizan
Defence for suspended deputy inspector general of police (DIG) Mizanur Rahman today completed arguments and sought his acquittal from the charges in graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
During the closing arguments, advocate Ehsanul Haque Shomaji told the court that the prosecution failed to prove the charges brought against his client. So, his client should be acquitted from the charges brought against him.
After that, defence for two other accused-- Muzan's nephew Mahmudul Hasan, a suspended sub-inspector of police; and his brother Mahbubur Rahman -- sought time to start arguments on the next scheduled date.
Of them, Mizan is in jail while Mahmudul Hasan and Mahbubur Rahman are on bail.
And another accused Sohelia Anar Ratna, wife of Mizan, has been absconding since the case was filed against her.
On May 24, the prosecution completed arguments and sought the highest punishment (23 years) for all the accused, including Mizan, in the graft case.
Judge Monjurul Imam of Special Judge's Court-6 of Dhaka then fixed June 5 for the rest arguments from the defence.
Earlier, the judge recorded statements of the 27 prosecution witnesses.
On October 20 of 2020, the judge framed charges against Mizan and the three others in the case.
On June 24 of 2019, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case with its Integrated District Office in Dhaka against Mizan and three others on charges of amassing over Tk 3 crore beyond known sources of income.
