Former municipal mayor found dead in Jamalpur
The suspended mayor of Jamalpur's Dewanganj Municipality, Shah Newaz Shahanshah, has been found dead today at his home in Dewanganj upazila's Char Bhabasur area.
Police recovered the body from his Thotapara house this morning, reports our Jamalpur correspondent quoting Dewanganj Police Inspector (investigation) Habib Satti.
The 45-year-old deceased was also an expelled member of the upazila Awami League.
Shah Newaz's first wife Kakali Akhtar claimed that he did not die of natural causes.
She said she was at her father's house last night and Shah Newaz was at the house of his second wife, Shila Begum. She claimed that he was in good health on Friday night.
The OC said that the body was sent to Jamalpur General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Shah Newaz made headlines in 2021 when he slapped the upazila secondary education officer during a Victory Day programme on December 16. He faced criticism from different quarters over the incident.
The education officer later filed a case with Dewanganj Police Station. The local government ministry suspended him as mayor on December 21.
Two days later, Rab arrested him from a Dhaka hotel. He walked out of jail on bail after one and a half months.
