DSA case: HC refuses bail to Jhalakathi BCL man
The High Court today refused to grant bail to a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activist of Jhalakathi district, Md Toriqul Islam Opu, in a case filed under the Digital Security Act for his "derogatory comment" on social media about senior Awami League leader Amir Hossain Amu and one Sumaiya Hossain.
The bench of Justice JBM Hassan removed the bail petition of Toriqul Islam from its cause list, as he is accused in seven other criminal cases.
While hearing the bail petition, Toriqul's lawyer SK Eusufur Rahman told the HC bench that the name of Toriqul Islam was not mentioned in the first information report (FIR) of the case, but police arrested him based on their suspicion.
Lawyer Eusufur said the main accused of the case Sheikh Md Rabbi has been out on bail but Toriqul Islam has been in custody for around four months in the same case.
No lawyer from Jhalakathi stood for him before the lower court concerned, he argued.
Lawyer Eusufur told this correspondent that the informant, Mostafizur Rahman, mentioned Sumaiya Hossain as daughter of Amir Hossain Amu although he has no child.
Jhalakathi Bar Association's General Secretary ASM Mostafizur Rahman filed the case with Jhalakathi Police Station on December 5 last year against local BCL leader Sheikh Md Rabbi and several others, including Toriqul.
Law enforcers arrested Toriqul on April 9 this year in connection with the case.
Deputy Attorney General Tushar Kanti Roy represented the state during hearing.
