Death penalty a proper punishment for brutal killing: HC on 2014 Mymensingh double murder
Observing that death penalty is the proper punishment for "brutal" murder of a couple, the High Court today confirmed the capital punishment for a convict in a double murder case of Mymensingh.
The HC bench of Justice Md Rezaul Hasan and Justice Kazi Ebadoth Hossain stated that ensuring the security of each individual in their own home is fundamental.
With this observation, the bench confirmed the death sentence of convict Golam Mostafa Mithu for killing Abdul Haque, a retired postmaster, and his wife Raihatun Nessa, a government primary school teacher, in 2014.
Court sources said Mithu (22), a tenant of Abdul Haque (65) on July 12, 2014, accompanied by his accomplices in a preplanned manner entered his house and killed Abdul Haque and Raihatun Nessa by indiscriminately hitting them with sharp-edged weapons for money.
Delivering judgment on the death reference (trial court documents) and appeal of Golam Mostafa, on March 28, the HC bench said the convict's (Mostafa) involvement in the double murder has been proved beyond doubt in the statements of the witnesses, inquest and post mortem reports, evidence and his confessional statement.
"Both the victims were elderly persons. They were killed with repeated blows of machetes in their own house. Death penalty is the appropriate punishment for such brutal killing," the HC bench observed.
Mymensingh sessions judge on June 26, 2016, sentenced Mithu for killing the couple.
Lawyer Fazlul Haque Khan argued for the plaintiff while lawyers SM Shahjahan, Forhad Ahmed, Amir Hossain, Shafiqul Azam Khan and Anwarul Islam appeared for the convict and Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain represented the state during the hearing of the death reference and appeal before the HC.
