Cattle-laden truck: Jubo League leader, 4 others arrested for extortion
Police arrested a Jubo League leader and four of his associates for allegedly beating up cattle traders and snatching away Tk 5,000 from them in the capital's Shukrabad area early today.
After obstructing the cattle-laden truck, which was heading to Chattogram from Naogaon, they also tried to take their cattle to a specific market, alleged the traders.
The truck driver Zulfikar filed a case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station over the incident, Utpal Barua, officer-in-charge of the police station, told The Daily Star.
The five were sent to jail with the court's instruction, he added.
The arrestees are Kazi Maruf Hossain Biplob, convener of Mohammadpur unit Jubo League, his associates Dewan Arafat, Mohammad Tanvir, Johirul Islam and Md Rafi.
The incident took place amid the Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq warned of stern actions if trucks transporting cattle were subjected to extortion ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
The DMP chief also said that cattle traders would not be forced to take their cattle to specific markets.
Zulfikar said that some cow traders left for Chattogram's Boyalkhali market with 18 cows from Naogaon. When it came to Shukrabad area around 3:20am, 11-12 men intercepted the truck, beat up the traders and truck driver and tried to take away the cows.
They also snatched away Tk 5,000 from a cattle trader.
At that time, traders shouted for help after noticing a police patrol team. The police team arrested four from the spot. Later, gaining information from the arrestees, the Jubo League leader was arrested.
The OC said the accused admitted that they were trying to force the traders to take their cattle to a specific market in Tejgaon Industrial area.
