Botched C-Section: Mother dies 8 days after baby
Eight days after the death of her newborn, following an alleged botched C-section at the Central Hospital, Mahbuba Akter Akhi died yesterday.
The 25-year-old had been on life support at the LabAid Hospital. She breathed her last around 1:45pm.
Her baby died just after the C-section on June 10.
Akhi's condition started deteriorating after the surgery and she was taken to LabAid Hospital the same day.
"I demand justice," her husband Yakub Ali Sumon told reporters yesterday.
Following the death of the baby, Yakub filed a case with Dhanmondi Police Station on June 14, bringing allegations of botched C-section and fraud against the doctors concerned and the hospital.
Police arrested two physicians who were sent to jail by a Dhaka court the next day.
Health Minister Zahid Maleque yesterday said that the government will be cautious so that such deaths do not happen in the future.
"These deaths [of Akhi and her baby] are very unfortunate. There are protocols [for C-sections], and we do oversee whether they are maintained. We will continue our supervision," he told reporters.
He said a legal process was started and action would be taken according to the law.
The health directorate on Friday suspended surgery and ICU services at the Central Hospital until further orders.
According to the case statement, Akhi was under the supervision of gynaecologist Sangjukta Saha of Central Hospital for the last three months, and her condition was stated to be normal.
Akhi was hospitalised with labour pain at the hospital under the supervision of the gynaecologist around 12:50am on June 10.
Even though Sangjukta was not present, her assistant told the family that she was in the operation theatre.
The arrested doctors performed the C-section that caused the death of the newborn.
