Bangladeshi killed in mob beating in India, Lalmonirhat locals say
A Bangladeshi man, Rezaul Karim (34), was killed in a mob beating -- on thief suspicion -- by villagers in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, India, while he was bringing cows from there.
Locals of Lalmonirhat's Shamshernagar border and Jagatber Union Parishad Chairman, Mostafizur Rahman, confirmed the development to our Lalmonirhat correspondent today.
Another Bangladeshi, Babul Mia (35), was injured in the mob beating and was handed over to Indian Border Security Force (BSF), they claimed.
The incident occurred in Bhogramguri village in Cooch Behar, about 300 metres inside India from Shamshernagar border, at Jagatber union under Lalmonirhat's Patgram upazila.
According to locals of Shamshernagar, a group of 9-10 people, including Rezaul and Babul, entered India early today. When BSF members patrolling the border chased them, they dispersed and fled in different directions. Rezaul and Babul both entered Bhogramguri village and were beaten on suspicion of stealing cattle. Rezaul died on the spot, while injured Babul was handed over to the BSF by Indian locals.
Jalal Sarkar, commander of Border Guard Bangladesh's Shamshernagar camp, said that BSF had not yet informed the BGB about the incident. He declined to say anything else about it.
