An arrestee has escaped from Gulshan Police Station in Dhaka through the ventilator of a restroom at the station.
The incident took place yesterday (August 27, 2022), Abul Hasan, officer-in-charge of the police station, confirmed to The Daily Star today.
The arrestee, Khadiza Akhter, was accused in a case filed with the station over theft on August 23, the OC said.
Police arrested Khadiza from Brahmanbaria on Friday (August 26, 2022) night and recovered a gold chain from her possession.
After she was brought to Gulshan Police Station, she asked to use the restroom around 8:30pm last night and was escorted by a female police official. Khadiza, however, did not come out of the restroom and it was later revealed that she fled through the ventilator, OC Abul Hossain said.
According to the case statement, Khadiza used to work as a house-help at a house in Gulshan-2. On August 17, she took leave citing illness and left the house. Later it was found that Tk 1.75 lakh cash and more than four bhori (46.656g) gold was missing from the house (worth approx Tk 2.02 lakh today).
CCTV footage of the house showed that Khadiza had stolen the money and gold between 3:12-3:14pm on August 16, 2022. The case was filed against her after her involvement in the theft was confirmed by the CCTV footage.
Police are still on the lookout for her, OC Abul added.
