60 gold bars worth Tk 9.17 crore seized in Jashore
Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh last night seized 60 gold bars weighing 9 kgs during a raid in Jashore town's Rajarhat area while they were being smuggled to India.
The market value of the seized gold is Tk 9.17 crore, BGB confirmed at a press briefing, reports our Benapole correspondent.
Acting on a tip-off, a BGB patrol team challenged a private car at Rajarhat on suspicion of heading towards Benapole to smuggle gold out of Dhaka, said BGB 49 Battalion Commander Lt Col Shahed Minhaj Siddique.
To evade arrest, the driver tried to escape but the car lost control and fell into a ditch, he said.
Before the team could reach the spot, the smugglers onboard, including the driver, quickly exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.
After searching the car, BGB men found gold bars hidden inside.
The process of depositing the seized gold to the treasury through Jashore Kotwali Police Station is underway, the official said, adding that the private was handed over to the police station.
