Border killings unexpected for both India, Bangladesh: Indian envoy
India is always vigilant to stop the killings on borders with Bangladesh, and such casualty is unexpected for the both countries, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Kumar Doraiswami said today.
He was speaking as the chief guest at the handing over ceremony of an ambulance to Rangpur City Corporation as a gift around noon today.
Joint steps should be taken by the two countries to resolve such tragic incidents, he said.
The Indian border guards have been specifically told not to open fire on the borders if there is no threat of attack on them, Doraiswami said.
"We do not want border killings in any country," he told the journalists while visiting in Rangpur.
"Illegal activities have been increasing at the borders. Different countries are using the land of Bangladesh as a route for their illegal activities. If we want to stop border killings, we have to stop smuggling," he said.
However, the Indian government is vigilant to prevent the incidents of border killings in the future, he said.
He also spoke about the water sharing of the Teesta river, development partnership, trade and commerce, medicine, education and culture, our Dinajpur correspondent reports.
He also said that India is always beside Bangladesh in fulfilling its promises. Besides, the relation between these two countries is very good. Bangladesh also stood by India's need as a true friend. This relationship will continue in future, he added.
Doraiswami said at the beginning of coronavirus pandemic, various medical supplies including ambulances were given to Bangladesh by the Indian people.
